Freshwater Prawns

Native to South East Asia, freshwater prawns live in fresh and brackish waters (a result of mixing freshwater and seawater to form an estuary) This species is of commercial importance in India and Bangladesh. Traditionally cultivated in ponds in the Malay Islands the species is now farmed throughout the region. Freshwater prawns can grow to be over 30cm in length.

It is one of the prime aquaculture species, since it can be raised in freshwater ponds, so carefully tended marine environments are not needed.
